Does treadmill pace match outdoor pace?

Why the belt hides your pacing decisions
The deeper reason to run outdoors is not impact or footstrike, useful as those are. It is that a treadmill makes every pacing decision for you, and pacing is a skill you can only build by practising it. Set the belt to 5:00 per kilometre and it holds 5:00 whether you feel strong or terrible. Your legs never have to choose. On race day nothing holds the pace for you, so the first time you have to self-select an effort under fatigue is the worst possible moment to discover you have never done it.
This shows up most cruelly on the compromised runs. Off a hard sled, the belt keeps turning and drags your legs into the pace whether they are ready or not, which flatters your readiness.
