How should you time each breath?
Both machines have a clear two-part rhythm: a powerful drive and a lighter recovery. Match your breath to it. This rhythmic breathing does two things: it clears carbon dioxide efficiently and it prevents the shallow, panicked gasping that comes from breathing out of sync with your effort. Twelve years of rugby taught me that controlled breathing under load is a trainable skill, not a personality trait; you drill it until it's automatic, the same way you drill a stroke.
What stroke rate keeps you aerobic?

- Set the damper moderate (around 5-6 on the rower) so each stroke is powerful but not grinding.

How do you train breathing control specifically?
Breathing control improves fastest through steady aerobic work in Zone 2, where you deliberately hold a pace you can nasal-breathe or talk through. This raises the pace at which your breathing stays calm, so race pace feels less threatening. "People treat breathing on the erg as something mystical. It isn't: it's a rhythm you attach to the stroke and a pace you chose before you sat down. Get the split right and the breathing looks after itself. Get it wrong and no breathing technique will save you," says Michael Snook, CTO, THETA.
The SkiErg and the rower are not the same problem
They get lumped together because both are ergs, but they redline you differently, and treating them identically is why some athletes handle one cleanly and blow up on the other. The SkiErg is the first station of the race, so you arrive fresh, adrenaline high, and the double-pole action is deceptively upper-body and trunk driven. The danger is attacking it because you feel strong and have not yet learned the day is long. A blown SkiErg sets a breathing spiral that colours the entire first run and quietly poisons the opening third of the race.
The rower comes fifth, after the sleds and burpees, so you arrive already fatigued and it is far more leg-driven than the SkiErg. Here the breathing problem is compounded by legs that are asked to drive hard again just before you have to run on them. The rhythm is the same, exhale on the drive, but the pacing margin is smaller because you have less in reserve, so the row split has to be that bit more conservative relative to your fresh ability.
What to do once you have already redlined
Sometimes the split gets away from you and the breathing is already ragged. Panicking and stopping dead is the wrong move, because a full stop lets the heart rate stay high while you lose position and time. The better recovery is to back the effort off deliberately for ten to fifteen strokes, lengthen the exhale, and let the split drift a few seconds slower while you re-find the rhythm, then settle back onto a sustainable pace for the remainder. You cannot un-spend the oxygen debt mid-station, but you can stop it growing. The same applies coming off the machine: the first 100 to 200 metres of the following run is where you re-settle the breath rather than chase pace, buying back control before you ask the legs for more.
