The method is easier to trust with numbers on it, so here is an illustrative athlete finishing around 80 minutes and wanting to know where to train next. These figures are made up to show the process, not benchmarks to copy.

Say their sled push comes in at 4:20 and their gut says that is the problem because it felt brutal. But the benchmark for an 80-minute finisher is about 4:00, so the gap is 20 seconds. Now look at the runs. The first is 4:35 and the eighth is 6:20, where the benchmark decay for that finish time might be 45 seconds rather than the 1:45 they actually lost. That is a full minute of avoidable time bleeding out of the runs, three times the size of the sled gap.
