Why does compromised running decide the race?
Because the station loads are fixed for everyone in a division. 152kg total on the Open sled push, 6kg wall balls to a 3m target. The absolute time gap between a strong amateur and an elite on any single station is often only a minute or two. Running is where the gaps compound. Eight legs plus the roxzone transitions add up, and a 90-second-per-km fade turns into ten minutes or more across a race. In my coaching experience, athletes obsess over the sleds and neglect the running that surrounds them, which is exactly backwards.
What causes your running to fall apart?
Two things: a thin aerobic base and poor transitions. When your aerobic engine is small, more of each run leans on the anaerobic system, which fatigues fast under repeated station loads, so by run six there is nothing left. And when you sprint out of a station on shredded legs, you spike your heart rate and pay for it across the whole next kilometre. Compromised running is a trainable quality, but only if you stop training running and stations as if they were separate sports.

How do you train compromised running?
You cannot fix it with more fresh 5km efforts. Build the engine, then teach it to run tired. Follow this order.
- Build an easy aerobic base. Keep most weekly run volume at conversational Zone 2 pace.
- Add station-to-run couplets: finish a sled push or lunge block, then immediately run 400–1000m at race pace.
- Rehearse smooth transitions. Accelerate out of each station over 100–200m rather than sprinting.
- Progress the compromised dose weekly, chaining more couplets as the block advances.
- Retest with a part or full simulation every four to six weeks and track your fade against the bands above.

How much time can flattening your fade save?

The gains are unglamorous. No faster fresh 1km, just a fade that stops bleeding time. That is why it is invisible to athletes who only test fresh running. Measure your pace when pre-fatigued and you will see where your race is actually won or lost.
