The Full HYROX Race Simulation: When, How Often and How to Run One

Why is a full race simulation so valuable?

Nothing else reveals how your body handles the specific chain of HYROX fatigue like doing the whole thing. A simulation shows you whether your run pace holds after the sleds, whether your wall balls fall apart at rep 40, and whether your Roxzone transitions are sharp or sloppy. These are failures you cannot predict from isolated training, and they are cheap to fix in training and expensive to discover on race day.

A simulation also builds psychological certainty. Knowing you have completed the full distance and station load removes race-day doubt, letting you commit to a pacing plan rather than guessing. It converts an unknown ordeal into a rehearsed performance, which for most athletes is worth several minutes on its own.

When and how often should you run one?

Timing matters more than frequency. Run your first full simulation around 8–10 weeks out to establish a baseline, a second at 4–5 weeks out to test refinements, and optionally a final controlled one at 2–3 weeks out that doubles as a taper sharpener. Avoid full simulations in the final 10 days. The recovery cost outweighs the benefit that close to race day.

Frequency should respect recovery. A true race-effort simulation is as taxing as the race itself, needing 4–7 days of easier training afterwards. Two to four across a block is plenty; more than that eats into the specific training that actually builds fitness. Between full simulations, use half-simulations of 4 runs and 4 stations to practise the pattern at lower cost.

How do you actually run a solo HYROX simulation?

Set it up to mirror race conditions as closely as your venue allows. The steps below are the coached protocol for a valid, useful simulation.

  1. Choose a venue with a measured 1km loop or treadmill and space for all stations nearby.
  2. Lay out equipment in station order so transitions replicate the real Roxzone flow.
  3. Warm up as you would on race day, then start your watch and do not stop it until the final wall ball.
  4. Run each 1km, then complete the station, then move immediately to the next run, time transitions.
  5. Fuel and hydrate exactly as you plan to on race day to test your gut.
  6. Record every run split, station time and transition so you can analyse where time went.
  7. Log how you felt at each stage to identify your fade point.

What should you measure and learn from it?

The data is the point. Compare your first and last run splits to see how much you faded, and flag any station where you stopped or broke reps unexpectedly. The table below shows what each metric tells you and what to change.

How do you avoid the common simulation mistakes?

The biggest error is going out too hard because there is no crowd to pace against, then blowing up mid-race and learning nothing about sustainable pacing. Set target splits before you start and hold them. The second error is skipping transitions (walking between stations casually) which hides the Roxzone time that matters on race day. Time every transition as if a clock is running, because it is.

The third mistake is treating a simulation as weekly training. It is a rehearsal, not a workout, and doing it too often prevents the recovery and specific development that build speed. Space them out, recover properly, and let the specific run, strength and station sessions between them do the heavy lifting.

How often should I do a full HYROX simulation?

Run 2–4 full simulations across an 8–12 week race block, spacing them roughly 3–4 weeks apart, with the last one at least 10–14 days before race day. Full simulations are as demanding as the race itself, so more frequent attempts cost more recovery than they return in fitness.

How much slower is a solo simulation than race day?

What equipment do I need for a home simulation?

Ideally a SkiErg, rower, sled, sandbag, farmers handles and a wall ball with a target, but substitutes work: banded pulldowns, heavy carries, rope pulls, a rucksack and a medicine ball cover most stations.
