How do you decide for your race?

Base it on the venue and your own heat tolerance:

What does the extra fabric actually cost you mid-race?

Play out where it bites. You are on the fifth run, heart rate already high, and the arena has been climbing in temperature and humidity for the best part of an hour. Cooling happens by evaporation: sweat leaves the skin, takes heat with it, and you get colder. A sleeve sits over the forearm and upper arm, some of the most exposed, best-ventilated skin you have, and does two things to that process. It slows the air moving across the skin, and once it is saturated it holds a warm film of sweat against you instead of letting it evaporate away.
