Three properties, in order

Test it before you trust it
Picture yourself 40 minutes into a hard session, soaked, deciding whether this is the top you race in. Never race in something you have not sweated through. Run a full or part race simulation, then judge it on these points.
- Feel the top dry, then again after 40 minutes of hard work, and note how much heavier it feels.
- Check for cling on the chest and stomach during compromised running after a station.
- Watch for chafe at the shoulder seam, hem and underarm where soaked fabric rubs.
- Confirm the fit stays clean, so nothing rides up during sandbag lunges or wall balls.
- Wash and dry it overnight to confirm it is ready for back-to-back testing.
Why some synthetic tops still go heavy
Picture the athlete who did switch away from cotton, bought a polyester tee, and still finished with a top hanging heavy and clinging on the last run. It happens, and it is worth understanding, because it shows that "not cotton" is a floor, not a guarantee. Three things can undo a synthetic fabric. The first is a heavy knit: even a hydrophobic fibre traps water in the gaps between threads if the fabric is dense and thick, so a chunky polyester tee holds surface water in its structure the way a sponge holds it between cells, without the fibre absorbing much at all. The weight is in the build, not the fibre.
The second is a treatment gone wrong. Fabric softener leaves a residue that coats the fibres and makes a hydrophobic surface behave more like an absorbent one, which is why a well-chosen top can slowly get worse at shedding sweat over a year of the wrong wash. The third is simply a lack of ventilation: a fabric that wicks well but has nowhere for the surface moisture to leave keeps holding it. This is why the three properties have to work together. Is a singlet always lighter than a tee?
