How should you pace the runs?

Even to slightly negative. The classic sub-90 error is running the first two kilometres at 5:00/km on adrenaline, spiking the heart rate, and then walking chunks of the back half. Instead, settle onto your target pace from the SkiErg onward and aim to run the final runs no slower than the early ones. The skill that unlocks this is compromised running. Being able to leave a station and immediately find your pace instead of shuffling for 200 metres. That single ability is worth more to a sub-90 attempt than any station PB.

How do you train to break 90?

Build the specific capacities the splits demand, in order.

  1. Raise your aerobic base so 5:30–6:00/km is comfortable when fresh.
  2. Drill compromised running: intervals straight off sled, row and wall-ball work.
  3. Practise unbroken or minimally broken station sets to protect your rhythm.
  4. Rehearse transitions in every simulation so the roxzone becomes automatic.
  5. Run a full or part race simulation to prove your splits add up under fatigue.

Who is realistically ready for sub-90?

An athlete who can run a 5km comfortably around 24–26 minutes, handle the Open station loads without failing, and has trained compromised running is in range. If your standalone 5km is well outside that, build the engine first. You can't hold 5:30/km on tired legs if you can't hold it fresh. Sub-90 is a common, attainable target for consistent amateurs; it sits well short of the sub-65 that marks roughly the top 2% of finishers. As of 2026 it remains the most popular first "real" time goal we program toward, and the roxzone is almost always where the final minutes are found.
