When I dug into this for THETA, the honest answer is that compression is oversold for performance and undersold for recovery. Controlled studies broadly show small and inconsistent effects on power, endurance and running economy during exercise: some athletes benefit slightly, many show no measurable change. Where the evidence is more consistent is post-exercise: compression appears to modestly reduce delayed-onset muscle soreness and perceived fatigue, which matters if you're racing again or training hard the next day. Twelve years of elite rugby taught me to separate what feels helpful from what measurably is, and compression sits mostly in the "feels helpful" column during competition.

What real benefits can you expect in a race?

The plausible in-race benefits are mechanical and psychological rather than metabolic. Compression reduces muscle oscillation, the small vibrations that add up over 8km of running, and many athletes report a lower perceived effort even when the physiological data barely moves. There's also a practical benefit that has nothing to do with compression science: well-fitted compression kit doesn't ride up, bunch or chafe during lunges and burpees. Over a 90-minute race, staying comfortable and unchafed is a genuine advantage. It's just not the advantage the marketing implies.

Should you race in compression or use it after?

Decide based on what you're actually chasing. If you want recovery, the stronger case, wear compression in the hours after training and racing:

  1. For performance: only race in compression if you've trained in it and it stays put: expect comfort, not free speed.
  2. For recovery: wear graduated compression garments for a few hours after hard sessions or races.
  3. For fit: prioritise kit that doesn't ride up during lunges, burpees and wall balls.
  4. For heat: consider that extra layers add warmth, which can hurt on a hot race day.
  5. Never debut new compression kit on race day: test it in a simulation first.

Does fabric and fit matter more than compression?

For most amateurs, yes. A HYROX race is a sweat-soaked hour or more of movement, and the kit properties that reliably affect you are moisture management, freedom of movement and the absence of chafe points. A well-designed performance garment that wicks and stays in place will do more for your race than the compression rating on the label. This is why I'd tell an athlete to choose kit for how it performs across all eight stations and 8km of running, and treat any compression benefit as a small bonus rather than the reason to buy.
