Walk the transition, because that is where the race is decided
Picture the sequence in real time. You finish the sled pull, you are already breathing hard, and the burpee broad jumps are next. Attack them and your heart rate climbs from, say, 165 to 185. You cross the station line, break into a run, and now you are trying to hold a 5 minute per kilometre pace on a heart rate built for a sprint. Your breathing is ragged, your legs feel fine but your engine is screaming, and you spend 300 to 400m just trying to bring the number down before you can settle. That is where 20 to 40 seconds a kilometre disappears.
Do the same station 10 beats lower and controlled, and you cross the line able to run within the first 50m. Nothing about your legs changed. Your heart rate did.
How to pace the station so the run survives
Efficiency is a heart-rate tool here, not a time-saving one. Step down and step up rather than jumping your feet if that keeps your breathing rhythmic. Keep the chest movement to the minimum the standard allows. Make the broad jump only as long as you can land in balance and reset without a pause, because a pause is where rhythm and breathing break. A shorter jump you can repeat 40 times unbroken beats a maximal jump that forces a stop after every rep, and it holds your heart rate flat instead of spiking it rep by rep.

You cannot train this fresh
Doing burpee broad jumps on their own teaches you almost nothing, because the problem was never the movement. It is the heart-rate management under the fatigue you carry into the station and the run you have to hold coming out of it. So train the transition, not the exercise. The session that matters is a brick: run, burpee, run, and hold pace across the join.
- Run 600 to 800m at just under race pace to arrive at the station already loaded.
- Do 40 to 80m of burpee broad jumps at a rhythm you can repeat unbroken, watching your breathing.
- Go straight into another 600 to 800m and hold the pace from the first run.
- Repeat two or three times. The target is not a fast burpee split, it is a small gap between your two run paces.
- If the second run collapses, you paced the burpees too hard. Do them slower next round.

The mistake even experienced athletes keep making
You would expect this to be a beginner error, but it catches strong, well-drilled athletes just as often, and for a specific reason: the burpee broad jumps sit at the point in the race where the ego is loudest. You have five stations behind you, you can feel the finish getting closer, and there is a real temptation to prove something on a movement that feels athletic and looks fast. So the athlete who has patiently paced the first half suddenly attacks the burpees, crosses the line at 185, and hands back on the next two runs everything their discipline earned earlier. The station is a trap precisely because it rewards aggression in the moment and punishes it two hundred metres later, when the reason for the ragged run is no longer obvious.
The tell that you have fallen into it is simple and worth watching for in training: if your burpee split is a personal best but the run straight after is your slowest of the day, you did not race the station well, you just spent the run paying for it. The athletes who get this right often feel slightly unsatisfied at the burpee line, as though they left something on the table. That mild frustration is the feeling of a correctly paced station, and it buys back far more time than the seconds it appears to cost.
