Understand the mechanism before you blame the sweat

Treat a wash cycle as what it actually is: a controlled abrasion and heat event. The garment is tumbled against itself and the drum, driven through detergent and water, then either hung or cooked dry. Two of those steps do the real damage, and both come down to heat and mechanics.

Start with heat, because it is the biggest lever. Elastane, the stretch fibre in your shorts and the shoulder-neck seams of your tops, is a polyurethane. Its recovery depends on long molecular chains springing back to shape, and heat is what breaks those chains down. A wash at 60C is not twice as aggressive as one at 30C, it is far more, because chemical breakdown accelerates sharply with temperature. Add a tumble dryer, which holds the fibre at high heat for half an hour of constant flexing, and you have the single fastest way to turn a fitted short baggy and drop the hem on a snug tee.

Now weigh sweat against that. Sweat is slow, and it only harms fabric once you let it dry into the fibres and crystallise. Wash cool soon after a session and you shed the salt before it can grind. Leave the kit balled up damp in a bag for days and the salt and acidity do turn corrosive, but that is neglect, not sweat itself.

The three ways a garment actually wears out

Learn to spot all three failure modes, because each has a different cause you can control.

  1. Elastane fatigue, from heat and over-washing. Shows up as lost stretch and a sagging, baggy shape.

The routine, every time

  5. Skip the tumble dryer entirely and hang to dry away from radiators and strong sun.
  6. Store dry, never damp in a sealed bag, so odour and salt cannot build up.

How long should it last

Set your expectations from the testing. Not that: leave it balled damp in the bag until the weekend, then run a hot cycle to feel like you gave it a proper clean and finish it in the dryer to have it ready. The first routine neutralises the only real threat sweat poses, the salt drying in, and it dodges the heat and tumbling that do the bulk of the damage. The second manages to inflict both forms of harm at once. Does sweat ruin gym clothes?
