What is the correct wash routine?
The routine is deliberately boring, and that is the point, because gentle and consistent beats the occasional deep clean. Wash cool, wash gently, and dry naturally. Follow this sequence every time:
- Empty pockets and close any zips so heat-sealed zip pockets and pulls do not snag or abrade other kit.
- Turn everything inside out to expose the sweat-facing surface and protect graphics and outer fabric.
- Wash at around 30°C on a normal or gentle cycle with a plain liquid detergent, avoiding powders that can lodge in ventilation holes.
- Leave out fabric softener, bleach and any "sport" additive you cannot verify is safe for elastane.
- Air-dry on a rack or line, out of direct sunlight and away from radiators.
Why cool water and no softener?
It is tempting to assume hot water cleans better, so let us take that apart. Cool water cleans technical fabric perfectly well, because the oils and bacteria that cause odour lift with the right detergent, not with heat. Hot water offers no cleaning advantage on synthetics and actively shortens their life by breaking down elastane and setting creases into ultra-light race fabric. How does good care interact with good construction?
Care and build work together, and neither rescues the other on its own. How do you deal with set-in smell without heat?
The one problem that tempts people back to hot washes is persistent odour, so it is worth solving properly. Smell in synthetic kit is not dirt, it is bacteria and the oils they feed on lodged in the fabric, and it survives a normal wash because a cool cycle does not always shift oils that have had time to set. The fix is not heat, which damages the fabric while barely touching the bacteria, but a pre-soak. What about race kit specifically?
Race pieces deserve a moment of their own, because they have the least margin. Do I need special sports detergent?

Should I use a mesh laundry bag?
