Fabric blends balance softness, stretch and recovery through a single number: the ratio of base fibre to elastane. Polyester or polyamide carries strength, structure and moisture handling; elastane adds the stretch and the snap back to shape. Softness, mobility and shape retention all rise and fall together as you move that ratio, so the balance is a trade-off, not a recipe you simply get right once.

The composition label as a dial, not a spec

A waistband bagging at the end of a season. That is what a blend ratio looks like when it has gone wrong, and it is where this whole subject becomes concrete. The two numbers on a composition label, say 89 per cent polyester and 11 per cent elastane, are not a fixed formula the garment happened to land on. They are a position on a dial, and every position buys one thing at the cost of another.

Turn the dial toward more elastane and the fabric gets softer and stretchier, which feels wonderful in the shop. Push it too far and you sacrifice recovery and durability, and that is the short that bagged out. Turn it the other way, toward more base fibre, and you gain structure and shape retention, but too far and the fabric stiffens and fights the deep lunges HYROX demands. There is no single correct setting. There is only the setting that matches what the garment has to do.

Reading the same trade-off across three THETA lines

Recovery is the property you only notice a season late

The stretch is what you feel in the shop; the recovery is what you feel a season later, usually without knowing why. Recovery is the fabric returning to its original dimensions after being stretched, and it is what stops shorts sagging at the waist, tights bagging at the knee and a top losing its fitted line. It is driven by the elastane and by how the fabric is knitted and finished, and it is the single property that separates kit that still looks fresh after a training block from kit that has gone slack.

This is why HYROX is so hard on a blend. A single race stretches the same garment thousands of times through lunges, wall balls and carries, and a training block adds frequent hot washing on top. Without strong recovery, the fabric deforms and stays deformed. Why one ratio can never win everywhere

The tempting question is which ratio is simply the best, and the honest answer is that the question has no answer, because the best ratio depends entirely on what the garment must survive. A short that spends its life in deep loaded lunges wants enough elastane to follow the movement, but it also wants enough base fibre and recovery that it does not sag at the waist after a season, so it lands in the middle of the band. A seamless women's short chasing squat-proof coverage at depth wants structure over maximum give, so it sits a touch lower on elastane and leans on the knit. A leisure piece worn between sessions can afford more softness because it is never asked to hold its line under a heavy sled. Read that way, the composition label stops being a quality score and becomes a statement of intent: it tells you what the designer decided the garment had to survive, and whether that matches what you are about to put it through.

How to judge where a blend sits on the dial

Do not judge a blend by how it feels dry on a hanger, because the hanger only shows you the stretch, never the recovery. Judge it on how it holds up. Here is how to read the trade-off before you commit.

  1. Read the label for a synthetic base with roughly 8 to 12 per cent elastane, the working band for training kit.
  2. Stretch it hard in every direction and watch it snap straight back, not sit deformed.
  3. Do overhead reps and deep lunges to confirm it moves without restriction or ride-up.
  4. Wear and wash it across a block, then check the waistband, knees and fitted lines still hold.
  5. Soak it and confirm it stays light and dries, proof the base fibre is still doing its job.

What decides how a fabric blend feels and lasts?

The ratio of base fibre to elastane. More elastane brings softness and stretch but eventually costs recovery and durability; more base fibre brings structure and shape retention but eventually costs mobility. The balance is a trade-off matched to the garment's job, not a single perfect recipe.

Why is there elastane in performance kit at all?

Does more stretch mean better quality?

No. A garment can feel very stretchy and still bag out fast if the elastane is too high or the recovery is poor. Quality is the right amount of stretch paired with strong recovery, so judge it by whether it holds its fit after repeated wear, not by how stretchy it feels new.

How much elastane is too much?

Performance kit usually stays in the 8 to 12 per cent band, because beyond that recovery and durability start to suffer. Seamless women's pieces may run a little lower, around 8 per cent, and rely on the knit structure for stretch instead. The aim is full movement without losing shape retention.
